NEW.TON is a project which foresees the port of Taranto being linked up - by sea - to the port of Igoumenitsa, gateway to the Eastern European market via the Egnatia Motorway.

The project aims at taking advantage than the opening of this new motorway offers in terms of goods transportation and economic growth.

As it connects Igoumenitsa to Kipi, near Istanbul, and, to Albania and Bulgaria, the Egnatia Motorway will represent a major opportunity to improve freight transport and, therefore, it will favour the development of the economy and trade of the countries lying along this route in a significant way.

The success and full exploitation of the new axis will also depend on the efficacy of management systems.

The authorities concerned will have the face and overcome difficulties deriving from the increased road transport adopting proper, integrated strategies. The intermodal approach and the promotion af maritime transport services are thus crucial.
